I think it is probably difficult for an activist to step outside their skin and look at what their role is, although you could also look at the people of NRA, another activist group, and be glad they are not making all the decisions! They are, however, having great influence with politicians. As you say, different people have different thoughts of what the most important issues are.

When you ask the question "why do people willingly obey authorities they know to be evil?" one might think of "mob mentality" if everyone else is doing it. Whether or not everyone else is actually doing it is all relative, and subject to perception!
